A Welcome Message from our Principal

Céad míle fáilte go dtí suíomh idiirlinn ár scoile, Scoil Náisiúnta Bhinn an Choire.

Bennekerry National School is a co-educational Primary School located five km east of Carlow town. In September 2012, we relocated to a brand new sixteen classroom building on the site adjoining our old school. Our school is a co-educational school with an enrolment of 425 pupils and a staff of twenty-three teachers.

Bennekerry National School is under Catholic Patronage. We are very open, inclusive and welcoming to children of all faiths and none.

In addition to the core subjects on the curriculum, there is a strong emphasis on the holistic development of our pupils in the areas of Music, Art, Drama and PE. We have a proud tradition of excellence in the realm of music. In 2013, we became involved in the “Music Generation Carlow” Programme through which all pupils learn to read music and play an instrument. In the senior classes the pupils have the option of learning to play the trumpet or trombone and these lessons are proving very popular indeed. We also take part in the Peace Proms concerts whenever they are in the area.

Our school community is extremely proud of our wonderful School Choir which is always a delight to hear when they perform during school functions and for special occasions. In May 2017 they scooped First prize in the prestigious AIMS Junior Choir Competition in New Ross, beating off stiff competition from choirs from all over the country. In 2018 they were placed 3rd in the same competition and received very favourable comments from the judges. We look forward to many other enjoyable performances over the coming months.

Sport is a very important part of our school culture. For many years our school teams have enjoyed great success in Gaelic Football, Soccer and Basketball competitions. In more recent years, our pupils have added Hurling, Camogie and Horse-riding to a growing list of accomplishments. We are thrilled with the recent successes of our school sports teams. The Girls won the Division 1 Cumann na mBunscol Football while the Boys team were crowned Division 1 Cumann na mBunscol Hurling champions. The Boys’ and Girls’ football teams both won their respective finals in the 2018 Glór na nGael Primary School Competition.  The Girls’ Basketball team won the Carlow Primary Schools Basketball League – Division 1. These victories brought great excitement and pride to our school.

Our pupils benefit enormously from the tremendous support we receive on an ongoing basis from our hard-working and very dedicated Board of Management and Parents’ Association Committee. The new playground equipment, which was installed in the summer of 2017, has been a wonderful addition to our school and is much enjoyed by all. Our all-weather pitch is under construction at present and this will ensure that sufficient outdoor space will be available all year round. We are hoping to achieve the “Active School Flag” in the near future and are also working towards our 6th “Green Flag”.  We enjoy many positive links with organisations in our local community and we are delighted to have established particularly close ties with Palatine GAA Club.

All members of our teaching staff encourage strong links between parents and teachers in order to make each one of our pupil’s educational experience as successful and rewarding as possible.

We hope our parents and members of the wider community will visit our website regularly and keep up to date with events in our school.

Beir bua agus beannacht,
